3 Wheeled Buggies

A 3 wheeled buggy-wheel buggy is used for off-road walking and to tackle terrain from rough roads or tracks in woodlands. They are also easier to maneuver up and down kerbs than models with four wheels.

MadeForMums reviews editor Kath tried one of these three-wheelers with her newborn and 3 wheel stroller reversible seat year old, and put it through its paces on asphalt and on the muddy ground. You can read her review here.

Stability

Four-wheel buggies with their center of gravity being balanced by the weight of your child in the seat are generally more stable than three-wheelers. Three-wheel buggies are still worth considering as they can handle everything from rough terrain to busy streets.

Choose a buggy that has large rear wheels, and a lockable wheel on the front. This will make it easier to drive and less likely to snap apart when you're on rough roads. These all-terrain buggies often have pneumatic tyres as well, which are ideal for handling surfaces that aren't paved and can be used on sandy beaches or tracks in woodland.

They are also the best buggies for running around in, as they offer great stability on rough terrain and help you keep pace with your jogging partner. They can also be used to go up and down steep kerbs and many come with spring suspension that is built-in, so your baby can enjoy a smooth ride.

One thing that can make a pushchair with three wheels difficult to maneuver is the large frame, which makes it more difficult to maneuver through tight spaces and narrow doors than a 4-wheeler. Some manufacturers have solved this issue by using clever design that flips the wheels up when they are not in use. This reduces their size and makes them easier to fit through doorways.

If yes, make sure to check for a lie-flat positioning and whether the design is compatible with second seating and buggy boards (if you'd like to add a toddler onboard). Make sure that the buggy has the ability to lie flat, and if it's compatible with a second seat as well as buggy boards if you intend to take a toddler along. A majority of 3-wheelers can fold flat and be stacked upright. This is a good option for those with an unwieldy boot space or have limited storage at home. However, some require you to take out the front wheel before folding in order to fit into more compact space.

Manoeuvrability

Three-wheeled buggies can be more maneuverable than four-wheeled strollers. They often have a swivelling front wheel that lets you shift direction quickly and steer with just one hand. Certain models come with locks on the wheel to give you stability on more rough terrain. Some models can be used with an additional seat or buggy board should you decide to grow your family.

If you're planning to take your three-wheeled vehicle off of tracks that are paved, it's worth opting for a vehicle equipped with tyres filled with air (also called pneumatic tyres) which can cope with the most challenging terrain. These tyres might need to be pumped up from time to time, but they will be more durable and puncture-proof than solid tyres. Look for a model with an adjustable swivelling front wheel that locks to help you negotiate tricky surfaces.

When folded, three-wheelers can be heavier than buggies with four wheels due to the single wheel on the front. Check to see if the model you're considering fits in the boot of your car and can be stood up, if necessary. Certain models can be folded using one hand, and can be raised when folded. This can help save space in small car boot.

A quality 3 wheel pushchair travel system wheel pushchair is able to cope with most terrain from busy main streets to tracks through woodlands. But it's important to consider the purpose you'll use it for day-to-day. If you'll be running the school run, it ought to be able to handle steep kerbs and slopes. If you intend to jog on it, ensure it has a swivelling “stretch front wheel' that can be locked. This will help keep the ride in place.

Kath, a MFM reviewer, discovered that her stroller on three wheels was able to handle urban and walks in the countryside. Kath said it negotiated rocky paths, cobbles and uneven pavements with ease and felt pleasant to jog with too. It's also a great choice for day trips as it has plenty of storage space, including a large, spacious basket with zip-top cover and an expandable 50+ UV hood. It can be adapted to fit a baby's needs from birth, with a carry cot or lay-flat seat. It's also compatible with the most popular second-seats and stroller boards.

Fabric Sling Seat

The main difference between a fabric sling and modular seat is that the fabric sling fits snugly inside the buggy frame as opposed to being positioned on top like a modular seat. This allows for a more ergonomically appropriate position for baby that instantly gives lower center of gravity that is at the proper height. This leads to a smoother push, a more light curb-pop (you don't need to exert the same effort and weight to lift the buggy off the curb) and increased stability and balance.

The sling fabrics used in these types of seats are extremely durable and easy to clean. These fabrics were developed specifically for sling chairs and are extremely UV-resistant and ventilated. They are also easy to maintain with mild soap and warm water.

If you are a jogger, or like to do some off-roading then an all terrain buggy is more likely to meet your requirements than a four-wheeled buggy. These styles have a wider base, are more stable and utilize air-filled tyres for smooth movement over rough terrain.

A brand best known for its car seats, Maxi-Cosi has recently added the latest 3-wheeler to its range with the Stella. The all-terrain stroller has a spacious and large seat that can be placed either facing the parent or the world. It also reclines flat and has an upgraded 5-point safety belt. It can be used with an infant car seat or carrycot starting at birth. It also has an enormous shopping basket.

Designed for the most discerning buggy drivers, this luxurious 3 wheeler is as stunning to look at as it is to use. The angular frame features stunning pewter finishes with touches of burnished aluminium. It is a real eye-catching piece. A spacious, cushioned seat that can be used as world or parent facing with a more secure 5-point safety harness as well as a full set of rain covers makes this a great option for parents who are active.

Modular Seat

Modular seating can be used to create a wide range of configurations to suit various seating requirements. It doesn't matter if it's a comfortable setup to watch movies or a spacious arrangement to entertain guests, modular seating is able to adjust easily. Many modular seating systems have cushions that can be removed, making it easy to clean spills or stains.

Modular Seating is available in various styles to match existing decor or as an accent piece. A variety of fabrics, colors and shape options ensures that you will find an alternative seating option that fits your taste. Modular seating comes with various functional features, including hidden storage compartments for easy organizing.

3-wheel buggies are especially suitable for off-road and all-terrain adventures because they offer more stability than strollers with four wheels. The large front wheel that is extremely maneuverable allows for smooth and quick movement. The tyres that are typically filled with air and have suspension, give you a great ride even on the roughest roads and trails. They're also great for walking up hills since the wheels aren't as close to ground as they are on four wheel pushchairs.

Parents who like to run and jog with their babies usually opt for strollers with three wheels because they are more nimble and sleeker than their 4-wheel counterparts. The GB Upp XL, for instance, features a sleek, burnished aluminum frame that has a simple one-handed fold as well as forward-facing and rear-facing seats. The Babyzen Yoyo, on the other hand, comes with an all-black frame that comes with a carrycot that can be placed in a fully lie-flat position, and has tyres that are air-filled.

Mountain Buggy Sport verso is another excellent all-terrain option. It's incredibly lightweight and highly maneuverable. It's also incredibly stylish. The buggy will last from birth, with the carrycot included, to toddlerhood with the modular seat. It does this all within the footprint of one buggy.
