This is more frequent with older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are not deep enough or not the right size for the latch, or because of a broken or damaged strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case, follow the exact procedure for adjusting the strike plate, using an iron file instead of an hammer and chisel.

You'll need a new cylinder for your sash lock door handles if replacing the handle and latch or your existing one is damaged. If you're not changing the locks, the new latch will fit into your existing recess and will work with the keys you have currently. Make sure you select an entry point with a rectangular cover plate that match your handles.
