Three Wheeled Buggies
If you're looking for a buggy run with or just a compact stroller for strolls around the neighborhood, three-wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre, even in tight spaces.
For a smooth ride, opt for a pram that has air-filled tyres and look for models with a 360deg front swivel wheel. However, they are prone to punctures, so be prepared with an repair kit.
Frame made of sturdy material
Figures have just been released revealing that the three-wheeled buggie - that noughties symbol of more money than sanity is on the verge of disappearing. They have been replaced by four-wheelers which can handle a wider range of terrain, while also looking stylish and easy to push.
The larger the wheels are the better your buggy will cope with bumpy surfaces and uneven pavements. The larger wheels both rear and front, make it easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy on the newborn baby and a 3 wheeler pushchair-year-old child and found it to be extremely robust. It handled cobbles, grass, and rough pavements, aswell as dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said that “it is solid to push and is very stable when you're on rough terrain. The tyres, that are inflatable and need to be pumped up regularly and have a suspension built-in. It was extremely comfortable for my children.
The shape and size of the seat is a further factor to think about. You will want it to be big enough for your child's comfort and you will also want it to be able to recline for them to lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat, which lets your child face you, whereas others only allow a parent-facing one.
An excellent option for taking on off-road and muddy trails is the Roma Atlas. Larger wheels
Larger wheels give your buggy more stability while driving over rough terrain. This is especially beneficial for buggies that are off-road. They also make it easier to maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have rotating wheels on the front, which help you navigate tight corners. Others are designed to run and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This can also help when you crash into an unintentional tree root or kerb as the front wheel can be lifted up slightly to prevent you from hitting it.
A lot of 3 wheeled pushchairs come with air-filled tyres that allow them to handle a wide range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They're also lighter. However, they're prone to punctures and you'll need to keep a repair kit, spare tube, and pump on hand.
Some of our favourite lightest 3 wheel stroller-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both buggies feature larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, “perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles” and are able to effortlessly go up and down kerbs. They also have a suspension system which in her words “smoothes out bumps very effectively”.
The drawback of having larger wheels is that they can make some buggies quite broad and may struggle to squeeze through narrow spaces. This can be problematic if you intend to use it as a jogger or you need to get through narrow doorways while out and about. Fortunately, the majority of models come with compact folding options that let you take off the front wheels to create more compact storage.
Easy to maneuver
One of the primary benefits to a three wheel buggy is that it's much more maneuverable especially with a child in the back. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels rotate at a moment's notice, and are easy to maneuver, making them perfect for challenging terrain such as cobblestones, parks, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried out a three-wheeler with her infant and toddler and wrote: “The Terrain was a pleasure to maneuver over tough ground and the swivel front wheel particularly useful. I was also awed by how well it dealt with kerbs using the hand-operated break. I found it to be extremely stable when going downhill or on uneven ground.”
The only downside of this incredible maneuverability is that the 3 wheel buggy's larger wheels sometimes mean that it can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces - something to keep in mind when you live in a urban area. If this is a problem, a 4-wheeled buggy may be the better choice for you.
