Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an attempt to return to the classic sextet format and an even more consistent and powerful album with a sharper edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The studio album came out just a few months later and the band embarked on a world-wide tour in support of it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the band's first album without one single track titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the band.
