A screaming students clawed at his head and tried to 'rip his face off' after taking a party drug, it was reported today.

He was taken to hospital and put on a ventilator after frantic friends called the emergency services.

Tom Bellmont, 20, refused to let anyone near him when he went berserk at flats in Marketgate, Bristol, at around 2am.

After being subdued by the medics, the music student, from Newbury, Berkshire, was treated at Bristol Royal Infirmary and released on Friday.

His reaction to the drug was believed to have been triggered by an previous medical condition.

A student said: 'He was screaming really loudly, flailing his arms around and looked in a very bad way. It was frightening. There was blood on his face.'

Another witness told the Sun that Tom was 'saying he could see the devil and that his brain was hurting.'

The drug, which can be in white powder form or in small capsules, was first used as a therapy aid in small doses because of its limited side effects.

While the drug often render users unable to concentrate deeply on anything in particular, some can become engrossed in an activity such as watching a movie or playing a video game, distracting themselves from the visual and auditory effects of the drug.

Excessive giggling or smiling is common, as is a tendency for deeper 'belly laughs'. Some users report mild 'jitters' (body tremors), shuddering breath, and/or mild muscle spasms.

Some users say that the effects are more intense when listening to music and report that they can see sounds and noises.
